Warkworth Castle
Warkworth Castle sits proudly on a hill overlooking the lovely village of Warkworth. Both the village and the castle are surrounded on three sides by a loop in the river Coquet. Despite my great love for Edlingham, Warkworth remains my favourite Northumbrian castle. I’ve found writing this blog quite difficult. I intended to give a brief historical background of Warkworth Castle, but found myself rewriting most of what the excellent English heritage website has to say. So instead, I have decided to limit myself to displaying some of my many photographs of the site and trying to give an insight as how this wonderful old structure has inspired me.
Incidentally, if you are interested in the history of the castle, you can follow the link below.

The Gatehouse
I still get goosebumps crossing the wooden bridge and entering the gatehouse. As you walk in here you can almost feel the castle folding itself around you.
The Great Tower
The view you get of the great Tower as you first enter the castle. It's a hugely impressive structure and you get a great sense of the history of the place wandering around inside.
The Great Tower
From the outside looking in.
Spring is a great time to visit the castle. The hill that the castle stands on is covered in daffodils. Their colour and vibrancy make a striking counterpart to the grim austerity of the imposing tower looming over you.
The Hall Range and Lion Tower
Unfortunately, not a great deal still stands, but there is the remains of a staircase against the outside wall. I used this when I imagined how someone might while waiting to be be admitted into Northumberland's presence.

Views of that staircase. 1)The entrance to the stairs. 2) The beginning of the stairs. 3) Halfway point. 4) At the top of the stairs and the entrance to the Duke's Chamber.
I could go on sharing more of the many photographs I have of Warkworth, but perhaps that is enough for now.
In closing, if you ever have the opportunity to visit Warkworth, please do so, It is a lovely village with several places eat and the castle is simply wonderful.
